michael graeve works across painting and sound installation, performance and composition. since 1993 his musical instrument of choice has been domestic record players and loudspeakers. he assists these systems in picking themselves up: rich textures and rhythms fall together and fall apart, evidencing simple interactions between machine process and human gesture. at the same time he has developed a language of hard-edge abstraction which shines in pristine contrast to the organic grain of the sound. sometimes these components clearly relate together, at other times they drift apart, both spatially and experientially. michael graeve has completed a bachelor of arts, honours (painting), a bachelor of arts (media arts) and a masters (media arts) at rmit university. he was a founding committee member at grey area art space inc (1996-1999), and is currently the west space inc program manager. he is represented by conny dietzschold gallery sydney/ cologne.
