mutable landscapes artist statements:
gary butler and ffwuc

the landscape mutates from the rural to the suburban. sheep and hayrakes compete against garden gnomes and elvis presley dolls. coolamon's historic up-to-date store gallery will be divided into two halves. one half for the suburbs, the other for the farmers. of course, tourists from the city are welcome (there's something for everybody at the up-to-date store). our installation places several famous artworks in rural and suburban contexts ranging from jasper johns to picture magazine, and including :

tom roberts: shearing the rams
vincent van gogh: wheatfield with crows
pablo picasso: les demoiselles l'avignon
marcel duchamp: bicycle wheel
dale hickey: untitled (1968)

various motion activated devices will drive an interactive sound scape of rural and suburban sounds that will ultimately mingle and clash within the space. collected bones, chains and shearing combs will rattle against the corrugated iron while gnomes will light up with the sounds of the suburban - cars, trains, the annual show. and the inflatable sex sheep add a new dimension to the home of the dirty weekend.
